The annual 2 Days Later Horror Shorts reaches its climax this weekend with the shortlisted screenings and awards taking place at the newly re-opened Theatre Royal, Addington street, Margate. The second oldest Georgian theatre in the country, and home to a ghost or two of its own, the venue provides a magnificent backdrop to Kent’s biggest – and scariest – horror film event.
Filmmakers across the country have been making their mini horror masterpieces in 48hours or less, following the launch of this year’s competition in July. With over 300 requests for the competition brief, over 20 films have been entered from Kent, plus close on the same amount from London and the home counties, besides entries from the rest of the UK, including Oldham, Newcastle and Northern Ireland.
Doors open at 2.30pm on Saturday 27 October, with the matinee screenings from 3pm. The short-listed films will screen from 7.30pm, followed by an afterparty at The Front Bar, Margate Harbour. A bar will be open throughout the day.
Tickets are free but should be reserved for each Screening and tickets collected on the door 15 mins before each Screening. Email info@2dayslater.co.uk, stating your name, which screening you would like to attend (or both) and the number of tickets you require. A limited number of tickets will be made available on the day.
Festival co-director Mick Etherton says: “this year's competition has attracted more entries than ever before and has also been supported by industry professionals such as TV actor Shaun Williamson, who took the role of a crazed murdered in a mental home in the short-listed film Asylum by filmmaker Alexander Hinks-Edwards”
A carefully selected industry panel, including James Moran, screenwriter of the horror feature ‘Severance’ and the hit BBC shows ‘Dr Who’ and ‘Torchwood’; Gina Fegan, CEO of the South East Media Network and Co-Producer of the soon-to-be-released British feature film ‘The Tournament’, starring Robert Carlyle and Ving Rhames, and Kim Newman, celebrated critic and broadcaster and a leading world authority on the horror film genre. Categories include Best Film, Best Special Effects and Best Editing. There is also an award for Best Student Film.
Audiences, however, will also have the chance to vote for their favourite film in the audience vote plus, for those wearing Halloween fancy dress, there is the chance of winning a selection of horror DVDs and other film goodies in the Best Costume competition.
2 Days Later was recently ranked in the top five film events in the UK for new filmmakers by Digital Video Magazine. It took on festival status in 2006 with the addition of free filmmaking workshops and events. The event is organised by Margate-based Beeping Bush Productions and Close-Up Film, a national film website and public relations company based in Canterbury.
Prizes include 2 places on the prestigious 2-day Raindance Lo-to-No Budget Filmmaking Course, a private screening of the winners work to industry professionals in a Soho screening room, plus a week’s hire of a drama shooting kit, courtesy of VMI. 2 Days Later is supported by Screen South and Thanet District Council, with in-kind support from Canterbury Christ Church Broadstairs Campus.
